Seventies Suburbia

Rodarte SS11 @ New York Fashion Week, September 2010

The more I look at this collection, the more I love it. The Mulleavy sisters have struck gold again with their collection for SS11 inspired by their native homeland of Northern California. The collection was awash with colours straight from 'seventies suburbia'; various shades of brown, gold and chartreuse and a wood grain pattern was printed on blouses, dresses and skirts throughout the collection calling to mind 70's wood panelling.

There were more retro inspired touches still the form collared blouses, high waisted trousers and skirts and vintage looking plaids.  Even the model's hair had been given the seventies touch- deeply parted to one side and secured with old-school barrettes. But by no means was this collection stuck in a time warp; peek-a-boo cut outs were seen on shoulders and torsos, and blouses were cropped short above high waisted skirts, giving us fleeting glimpses of skin.

  1. Everything you wrote about this collection made me see it through different eyes, where I had just glossed over it, your description made it come to life, I love it when that happens, someone else can interpret a collection in a way that makes real for me!
